Alliance Awarded Two Year HRSA Grant entitled "A DMV-Based Intervention to Increase Organ Donation in NYS"
In September 2011, the Alliance was awarded a two-year HRSA funded grant to work in DMV offices educating customers and Motor Vehicles Representatives (MVRs) about organ, eye and tissue donation. This will be accomplished through the use of Point of Decision (POD) materials including footprint stickers, posters, and enrollment cards with printed information on donation. Modules will educate MVRs about the donation provess and provide scripts for responding to anticipated customer queries about the donation process. In terms of outreach, the project aims to educate clerks in 25 of the 40 counties that permit POD materials in their DMV branches. The goal of the project is to increase organ, eye and tissue donation in New York State by increasing the number and proportion of individuals who enroll in the statewide registry.
Melanie Evans, Project Director for the Alliance is managing this grant in conjunction with Drs. Thomas Feeley, Michael Stefanone and Ashley Anker. This team previously worked together another HRSA grant from 2008 to 2011. For more information, contact mevans@alliancefordonation.org or call Melanie at 518-533-7886.
